A New Learning Curve...

This is what our pressure cooker looks like.  It's a Presto.  I have never used it.  Larry is the pressure cookerer (:o) ) in our family.  Me?  I've always been afraid of them...I witnessed an explosion in my Mom's kitchen as a kid.  Not fun!  No one was hurt but I swear, we were cleaning up pot roast for a week!  Cleaning it off the ceiling was the hardest.
So at the ripe old age of 65, I've decided to tackle it.  Northern beans.  Larry dutifully got the pot out, the beans and proceeded to enlighten me on the ins and outs of pressure cooking.  I used 2 and 1/3 cups of beans, rinsed with water....4 and 1/4 cups water...sliced one stalk celery in 4 pieces...1/2 bell pepper...1/2 large onion...1 large carrot cut into 4 pieces.
Drop everything into the pot...cover...cook.

It WORKED!   And it was done in 34 minutes!   Now I feel like I can use the pressure cooker for all sorts of things.

You can leave the large bits of veggies in the beans if you want...make some cornbread and you have good eats.  Now that Larry doesn't come to work with me anymore, I'm taking my lunch, daily.  This will feed him lunch here at home as well as me, at work.  Now I just need more ideas!
Well, guess I'll close this for now...Have a great week!

A favorite meal, but i am still fearful of the cooker. Someone gave me a electric one and I regifted to one of my kids who thought it sounded good. My grandmother always had beans going, a standard for lunch unless she had leftovers.Maybe that was why she and my grandfather had separate rooms. LOL I put about 3 times the sugar in my cornbread.

Well, young'un, you are a brave one! I'd never ever NEVER use a pressure cooker. My mom did though, and made some really good things and I believe she used it for food/veggie's to put in the freezer.

Since I've started using a crockpot again, beans along with the cornbread among my favorites. I really like the mixed beans, but Patti doesn't so normally I make the northern beans. :)

You have a great week also!

I've never used a pressure cooker. I don't think my parents even had one. That looks really good though.

I'm with Ann on this one...I don't think my mom owned one either! I have never used one as I have always been a bit scared of them! It sure does cook quickly though...maybe check out Pinterest for pressure cooker recipes!

I have never used a pressure cooker...but I have heard the horrors of them exploding. Yeah, I'm not big on exploding appliances. Yikes! Glad this worked for you though.

What causes them to explode??

I've never used a pressure cooker either! They scare me! I use my slow cooker a lot. Takes longer but not much chance of explosion!

My mouth is watering and I used to fear our pressure cooker as a kid! I have never owned one or used one without adult supervision, haaahaha. And I hated northern beans days growing up but yours look scrumptious. And that cornbread! Wheeee doggie. xoxo

Pressure cooking is the best! I have the older version from my mom including the old recipe book! Try Porcupine Meatballs some day. So good and great for cold weather days. Your beans look extra yummy!

(You know...the smart thing would have been to keep yourself in the dark so Larry would always cook with the pressure cooker, don't you.?) ;)

I was afraid, too. Been married over 50 years! So last year, I put on my plus sized, big girl panties. I ordered a "6-in-1" electric, fail proof cooker which included pressure cooking and slow cooking. Can't remember which other 4 things it did...
Now this was certainly going to rock my world! I was going to cook everything better and faster and I wouldn't feel "under pressure" to cook things under pressure ever again!

And, I know it will be just that way-- when I ever take it out of the box that I trip over every time I try to get to the washer and dryer.

Um---Baby steps, right?

I just read through your last three posts, catching myself up on your news. So, wishing a Happy Retirement to Larry and Happy Anniversary to the two of you! Also, that bean soup looks delicious! I need to invest in a pressure cooker!
Big Hugs!
