Good morning, friends...another week has flown by. It also seems that even when I tell the Universe that it needs to slow down time...no one seems to be listening to me...figures.
We went to Los Coucos Restaurant for our Valentine's Day lunch. We filled up on those darn chips and sauces even before the meals made their appearance! lol ... But we forced ourselves to eat them...so good.
I made French Toast Casserole this morning. I used the lighter French bread cut into cubes. I just threw together the ingredients, let it soak for about 15 minutes...added more cream, butter and some milk. Lots of sugar and cinnamon...and it made a great custard. The secret is getting enough cream, butter and/or milk added. I've had several of these casseroles that were too dry. It's all about the custard...bake for 50 minutes at 350*.
Larry had his second cancer BCG treatment on Friday. He did well. The evening is always the roughest but he's doing better now.
No one is above the law...No One.
Disgusting...
I made wings and potatoes the other day...seriously good.
I use this recipe to create my own onion soup mix. Make it up then store in a Ziploc bag or mason jar...whatever you have.
I found this recipe on Pinterest. The ingredients seem to make me envision a more lush and moist cake. I'll be trying it. If you make it, let me know how you did!
Well. Larry's Dad, Gerald, is still in the rehab center. I went to his house early the other morning to do some cleaning and clothes washing, sorting mail and emptying trash. Then, yesterday we both went to visit Dad...oh my...Now he's using his pent-up anger at not being able to do for himself, on the poor workers. One nurse we spoke with said she went to administer his meds and he just launched..."You don't have any brains in your head! Get out"... just to name a few phrases. I know he's tired... (new roommate = loud TV of which I asked the guy politely, to turn it down...he was nice and did so...) Then we went to the nurse's station, and we began our "chat" about things. Mainly, getting him out of that bed...on his feet...and when can his catheter come out! He feels locked into that bed... so after the fire was lit... they went to his room and the "ballet" began. When we finally left, his room was clean, bed changed, hearing aid found...fresh water on his bedstand, bathed and hair combed and wheeled to the lounge area still looking like he's like to do serious harm to anyone within arm's length! You'd think he'd be glad of this, but he got another "shot" in at Larry! We think, he thinks, the boys are just going to leave him there. Larry stood his ground after Dad screamed at him, politely telling him to just stop yelling at him! We are doing everything we can to help! And to stop insulting the staff! He then preceded to clam up...I know old age sucks...but you'd think after reaching 99, you'd be a bit more graceful about it. I wouldn't know...I don't think I'll make 99. Larry has gone this morning to check on him...We'll see what he says when he gets in...
SO... cliffhanger, I know but you'll just have to wait until next week to hear the rest of the story! lol
Until then...Have a sweet and safe week and...

Hi Donna! Darling pictures of Sloane. She is growing into at beautiful little girl! Your Valentine's lunch of Mexican food looks so good. We got Chinese food for Valentine's. I am so glad that your husband did well with his latest treatments. Thanks for sharing the recipes. They sound delicious! Have a good week. See you again soon!
Good to hear that your husbands treatment went well. Old people are sometimes hard to deal with, but those workers in Nursing Homes are well equipped to deal with many situations. I know people with dementia often have outbursts and have to be moved to memory care.
Such a precious video...one that will always be cherishes. Tell me please....it the first photo your kitchen? LOVE, LOVE, LOVE. Ann sure has a way of making the cutest cards....she is talented. My heart goes out to you all in being caretakers. This is a very difficult job. I remember all too well how often we would have to have talks with the nursing staff about all kinds of different things for my dads care. My brother and I learned that family had to be strong advocates for their loved ones. I know this is a struggle not only for you all, but for your FIL as well.. Prayers that things turn around fast for all...big hugs to you
The video is cute! Of course, Sloane is always cute!
I'm sorry about the issues with Larry's Dad. It's so hard, and his Dad isn't unusual. I worked in a skilled nursing center for years and there can be a lot of anger directed at the staff. However, most staff members understand what's behind it. Good for you guys for being advocates for him and the staff too.
I am glad Larry is doing better and that the treatments are working.
What a precious video clip. Such a treasure.
Too cute on the "missing dog."
Oh my the saga of your poor FiL. I do remember going through that same thing with both of my in laws. Dave's mother never swore in her life that I am aware of...but oh my when she was in the nursing home, the air would be blue sometimes. The aging mind can be difficult to deal with. At my 81 years and Dave's 83 years we know all about it.

loved all the food, prayers for hubbies treatments and for them to work well and quickly and for peace and strength to deal with DAD.. does Dad have dementia? sounds like it from here. waiting to hear the rest of the story. prayers for all of you to keep standing and standing strong, until it all gets better or maybe worse. I live waiting for the shoe to drop here. When i had to put daddy in the memory unit, it was horrible, he held onto both sides of the doors and refused to go in and was screaming cal the sherriff, you can't do this and many other things.
Glad to hear Larry's treatments are doing their work. French toast casseroll looks and sounds great. Have a good week, Donna.
Love that first photo of the waffles. Beautiful kitchen. The little Winston Churchill blurb made me laugh out loud. Rehab can be very demeaning to the elderly. When my 91 year old dad was in one they would ask him stupid questions to see if he was mentally sound, like: "How would you feel if your wife cheated on you". Really stupid. He hated it. Have a great weekend. Take care.
Just a heads up: The rehab center does NOT have to deal with bad behavior. They will boot him out if he continues verbally abusing the staff. We just went through this with my mom. And sending him home too soon can be a nightmare for all concerned. I'm sorry that you have this to deal with. Ugh.
Sam made such a sweet video of Sloane and the Valentine card is so cute.
Glad that Larry got through his latest treatment well and pray that you will all find the strength to support Gerald while still finding time for yourselves.
What a dear and sweet video Samantha made for Sloane. Loved it. Your food always looks so delicious. That's great that you make your own onion soup mix. I hope Larry's treatments go well each and every time. And I'm so sorry to hear that his dad is not doing well. It sounds like he is miserable, poor guy. I have heard that one has to be quite involved in those nursing homes if they are to get good treatment for their loved ones, and always be on it. That was so good of you to ask the other roommate to turn the tv down. I hope things get better for him. Sloane is so cute on Valentine's Day, and that first picture of the kitchen is so charming with the stove, waffles, and pink roses.

I must bring a kleenix to the computer when I read your post. Not to cry, but to wipe the drool from my chin looking at all your fabulous pictures of food. So sorry about your Larry's Dad, what a tragedy that he doen't realize how wonderful his son are and how they are doing everything to make his life better. The Valentine card and pictures of Sloane are adorable. I saw that lettuce doggie on fb and it so reminded me of our Molly Girl, (a little Shih Tuz we had for 15 years. Amazing how they can make food look so lifelike. Have a good week!!! Until next time.
All the food you posted looks so good. I'm hungry now. Come to think of it, I always get hungry when I read your posts.
Sorry to hear Larry's dad is givng everyone a hard time. Hope he's feeling better soon.
Happy Birthday to Sloane! Love the Caeser joke. French toast sounds great. Will need to make it soon. Janice
I'm pleased Larry's treatment went ok. Father in law is a bit of a worry it seems. The food looks very nice and the video is sweet.
Take care.
It must be difficult for Larry to see his father arguing with everyone. But I went through that with my 95 mother but the staff are used to it. Old age is very difficult.
A lovely video of Sloane she is so cute.
Many elderly seem to lose their filters, particularly when under duress.
You always make me smile, from Sloane to the lovely meals you post. I am sorry about your father-in-law. Keeping you in prayer my friend.
Donna, I loved the video that Sloane's mama did for her. So precious!
All of your food pictures look amazing...as always. Even the missing dog picture was a vibrant green.
I can't imagine being in a rehab center at the age of 99. You all are in our prayers. Isn't it a sad situation that family has to get involved to get the very basic things taken care of their family member? Believe me, we've been through this several times, and I know what you are going through.
Hugs to you, my friend.
Dianna
Love the video created by Sloane's momma and I'm so glad to hear Larry is doing well. What a shame Larry's Dad keeps giving you a hard time, though. I'm hoping the situation improves for you! Sending hugs from Belgium! xxx
Hello Donna, sending prayers for Larry’s treatment, and for all the other things you have to deal with, like his dad. Caretaking can be a very thankless task. I loved Sloane’s video and photos, always a cutie and the video was very cleverly done. Ann is spreading the happiness with her beautiful cards. Looks like you all had a lovely celebration of the day :) I loved the photo of Winston and Clementine. He loved her deeply and it was a long happy marriage. Thank you for all the great food photos too and particularly loved the little lettuce dog, such a hoot! Take good care of yourselves and I wish you all a very happy week.
