Father's Day...

A bill to accord national recognition of the holiday was introduced in Congress in 1913. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak in a Father's Day celebration and wanted to make it official, but Congress resisted, fearing that it would become commercialized. US President Calvin Coolidge recommended in 1924 that the day be observed by the nation, but stopped short of issuing a national proclamation. Two earlier attempts to formally recognize the holiday had been defeated by Congress. In 1957, Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote a proposal accusing Congress of ignoring fathers for 40 years while honoring mothers, thus "[singling] out just one of our two parents" In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972. Wikipedia

It did take quite a while for the recognition. If more fathers stepped up to their responsibilities, there would be soooo much less dependence on Uncle Sam! God bless your dad. I know that he had to be extra special.

Incredible! I can't believe Father's Day became a national holiday in my lifetime! Truly amazing and long overdue.

My own father (whom I didn't actually know, never having seen him after I was two years old), died in 1968 at the age of 37. I miss him still ... miss all the things we might have done together. I think he would've loved all of his many grandbabies.

Happy Father's Day to all the dads you love, Donna my sweet blogging buddy!

Spent the morning with a friend who had just lost his father. The holiday had drawn a thought that we sometimes never miss something in our lives until it is gone.Sad when we let this happen.

Poor dads, not officially given their day for so long. That surprises me in that we are, so often, a male dominated society. I am glad it FINALLY happened!
