August 15th, 1945......A Day in American History

The Kiss............

Gen. Douglas MacArthur signs as Supreme Allied Commander during formal surrender ceremonies on the USS MISSOURI in Tokyo Bay. September 2, 1945.

Col. Paul W. Tibbets, pilot of the B-29 Superfortress ENOLA GAY, waves from the cockpit just before taking off from Tinian Island to drop the Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima. The 9,000 lb. bomb was dropped from 31,600 feet and detonated at 8:15 a.m., August 6, 1945, about 1,900 feet above the center of Hiroshima. A blinding light, tremendous explosion and dark gray cloud enveloped the city, followed by a rising mushroom shaped cloud. The Japanese estimated 72,000 were killed and 70,000 out of 76,000 buildings in the city were destroyed.

40mm guns of the USS HORNET fire at Japanese suicide dive bombers, the Kamikazes, as the carrier's own planes were raiding Tokyo, February 16, 1945. By the end of the war, Japan will have sent an estimated 2,257 Kamikazes. "The only weapon I feared in the war," Admiral Halsey said.

What a day this was.....Freedom is Never Free................
Hope you All enjoy a Wonderful and Free weekend....I pray it Never changes..

Wonderful post! Hubby's dad was a nuclear chemist and did his part in the making of the bombs (in Oak Ridge, TN) that were dropped. My dad was in the first wave of ground troops sent in to Japan after the explosions. We enjoy freedoms today because of such contributions.

Your post is so moving, it really brings it home when read in small chunks of facts....just the horror and sacrifice faced by us all, and still faced by so many, it's a heart breaker...when will we ever learn....when will we ever be a peace....ever??
We are blessed with a good home, friends and family, please may it remain for all of us.
Love Lynn xx

Amen! We are so blessed to have our freedom.

Donna- A Father to be proud of for sure..My Dad was in the Pacific Theatre. At one point, his ship USS Bulmer) was dive bombed by Kamikazes and another time, a torpedo went right under the ship...right where Daddy and a fellow mate was standing. He said, all they could do was watch it and pray. Nope, freedom isn't free...Happy day sweetie.hughugs

Lynn- I don't think in This life, that the lessons that came Before, are being remembered...Now we have Russia and Georgia to pray about...hughugs

Donna- Yes Mam!! Thank God and country....Happy weekend sweetheart!!hughugs

One of the most awful business that war is. Three major wars in recent Finlands history, both WW's against Russia, it's been close call enough times.

With the recent turmoils in Europe and globally, it's getting worse than ever. Georgian crisis, Afganistan, Iraq, Tibet and China. It is the longest time in the history of man when we have had this long time of peace in Europe.

I truly hope it stays that way, it would bee so devastating to all, starting WW3. Every man in Finland is part of our military system, every family has their war time strories. Hope it never happens again and our children may grow with out it.
