I Made Detergent....I DID TOOO!!LOL...and it WORKS!

I found this blog, The Beehive Cottage, (I saved her to my blogroll) where she made her own laundry detergent! Suppose to save you tons of money...it's suppose to cost about 3 cent a load to do...SO, Hubby and I got up, went to town and got all the ingredients, came home and put it all together and then I went in search of something to wash!! I'd done all my laundry yesterday, so I had to search...AhHaaa!! The dog's bed!!Hahaaa....Corky was NOT a happy camper! In I throw the doggy quilts, I measure out three tablespoons of detergent into a small bowl and add hot water (I have a front loader and it needs to be liquefied). I pour it in...I ALSO add one half cup of VINEGAR to the rinse cup as a softener and turn the machine on! And what do you know??? It WORKS!! I was very pleased with the results and the vinegar really Does work as a softener! With the price of Downy and Tide these days, you need all the new ideas you can get!!
Happy Day or night everyone!!

I just wonder, when you use the vinegar, what do the clothes come out smelling like? The detergent you made, or the vinegar? And I wanted to tell you, I don't liquefy mine before putting it in the load, I put the powder directly on the clothes in my frontloader....works here! Were you able to find all of the ingredients in ONE store?

When I saw the first line of your blog, I thought, Donna, you NOT even! Home made laundry detergent?! WHERE did you find Fels Naptha? That soap is THE only thing to wash in to get rid of poisen ivy oils. It's hard to find any more. And I use vinegar in the rinse cycle too (I'm cheap)- and it's great for cleaning your kitchen and gets rid of hard water built up better and cheaper that fancier chemicals (vinegar is the strongest natural acid- stronger than lemon juice).

good thing to know....and i'm gonna check it out too!

Nathalie-Hahaa...I found the Naptha at a place here in town called Drug Emporium...If you can't find an old perfume you love but can no longer get, They usually still carry it! I love the place!! I didn't know that about Naptha!! Thanks for the info!hughugs

Kimberly- Enjoy it sweetie! Happy day to you!hughugs

These days, with the economic crisis, it's the best idea i've heard. And it's always an adventure to try and find new things.

I make this all the time, have for many years. It is a great money saver and the hardest part was getting hubs used to using just a small bit. Glad to see you tried it out!

When I make detergent my kids have always called the soap grated cheese.
Standard joke at our house if you swear or say something bad. You get your mouth washed out with cheese!!

Ok i went to the site and wrote down the recipe, never heard of that soap before but will look for it. It sure would save us money here at the motel and so green friendly too. Can't tell ya how many folks we have had that have allergies to laundry soap and bring there own sheets. LOL
I love the idea of the vinegar too.

Lilli & Nevada said...

Ok Donna, i went to the store, in fact i went to many stores, can't find the soap, can't find the arm & Hammer washing soda. So were is one to look for these 2 items. Maybe its only items found in the south.?

Donna said...

Hi Lilli! If you can't get these things locally, you'll need to look at getting them off the internet...or get different brands or formulas...let me do some research and see what I can find!!hughugs
